Human Geography Section at the University of Latvia Explores Regional and Social Challenges

On January 30, 2025, the Human Geography Section participated in the 83rd International Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia, which was held in a hybrid format.
The section was chaired by Māris Bērziņš, Elīna Apsīte-Beriņa, Zaiga Krišjāne, and Niks Stafeckis, guiding discussions on a wide range of research topics, including demographic change, depopulation, education accessibility, migration, and urban development.
The Horizon Europe RE-PLACE project was central to supporting and framing the discussions. The RE-PLACE project particularly emphasises the challenges faced by left-behind regions and the spatial dynamics of shrinking populations, providing critical insights for policymakers and scholars.
The Human Geography Section at the University of Latvia continues to serve as a vital platform for analysing and interpreting regional development challenges in Latvia and Europe, fostering informed academic and policy discussions.
